Mifare RFID - can it be done or are there plans to make it possible?

Is there a way (or is one planned?) of reading Mifare RFID tags. So many items and cards use it and it is disappointing I can find no way of doing it. I wanted to make a class registration app but our ID cards are Mifare.

Have you used Near Field Component?

The issue is that mifare tags do not appear to work with NFC....
