Can't update companion - install fails with NO_MATCHING_ABIS error

I'm trying to get the AppInventor emulator to work on my Mac, running macOS 10.12.6. I downloaded and installed the emulator package, and the website told me the AI Companion app on the emulator needed to be updated.

The update went wrong, and the new version of the companion app failed to install. When I tried to install the app manually, through the .apk, the emulator gave the error: INSTALL_FAILED_NO_MATCHING_ABIS.

How do I fix this?

If you want to update the emulator, you should connect the emulator normally and then use the Upgrade Companion menu item under Help. The APK linked from Companion Information doesn't have everything needed to support running in the emulator and is intended for physical devices.

When I tried connecting to the emulator today, it worked this time. I don't know why it couldn't find the companion app last night after the update.
